What is Literature? Defining literature -Definition of Literature.

Literature is a written writing which qualifies to consists of artistic quality. Literature is a work which constructed through using literary devices such as simile, metaphor symbol and some other literary devices which makes the work ambiguous and oblique. In simple words,
Any written work like, poem, play, prose, that has the purpose of telling a
story or amusing, as any fiction or fictional novel, falls under the category of literary
text. Apart from aesthetic pleasure it offers political messages or beliefs.
Some texts consist in the category of informational text such as science and history books. Literature is an umbrella term which covers up all the literary
works like poetry, plays, novels, short stories, prose; anything written, in
fact with an apparent purpose, rather than merely to communicate information or anything ascribed and examined as if it combines an artistic objectives. Not all writings constitute literature. Literature refers to the historical development of writings in prose or poetry which provides
entertainment, enlightenment, enthrallment, as well as information and instruction to the reader instead of  the
development of the literary techniques used in the construction of
these pieces.
An analysis of a play or a poem, for instance, may deal with different
types of images in or with the relationship between the form and content
of the work. (Khamis 2000; Barber, 1995). Literature is defined as an
artistic work that uses language to express a particular theme to a certain
audience (Mulokozi, 1996; Ntarangwi, 2004; Barber, 1995).
There are key terminologies in this definition which include artwork,
language, theme and audience. Two of these terms are particularly
significant for the formation of literary writing, for instance artistic work is merely constituted by the furnished figurative language. First of all,
when literature is considered to be an artistic work, the implication is that it uses
artistic devices as a way of delivering its intended information. In other
words, literature is a creative writing in correspondence with other artistic works such as painting, sculpture and pottery, embroidery and weaving (Mulokozi
1996; Ntarangwi, 2004; Newell, 2006).
One important point to take into account is that each artistic work intends to
convey a particular message to the audience through the use of specific mechanisms.
Literature is basically considered as the "Mirror of the society" therefore it's prime concern is to reflect the real picture of the society and it's virtues and vices.
